I've never met a real "christian"
One big difference is that they wouldn't advertise their religion to you for no reason. So unless you ask everyone you meet about their religion, it's possible you actually did meet at least one and didn't know.

Part of me thinks we should be subsidizing churches with taxes. Because the American system of “prosteltyze or loose your church” just led to super churches.
If a third of a population is vulnerable to psychological dependency then it’s time to work it into government, rather than small church battle royale for donation dollars.

In German, "evangelisch" and "evangelikal" are two distinct things. The first one is used for local denominations like lutheranism that tend to be chill, while the second is reserved for the US-brand skullduggery. Does Finnish do something similar, or are the two really conflated?

They still don't want to allow same-sex marriages though, although individual priests are allowed to go against the guidelines.

I have, and none of them followed a church.
That's the rub. Christian teachings are pretty damn good. Organized Christianity is manipulative hate nonsense, at least among many large US denominations.

It's sort of the same in the USA, in that evangelical is a broadly used term in the Christian community. For instance, there's a massive association of churches call the Evangelical Lutheran Churches in America (ELCA). Among other things, they consider themselves 'reconciling' churches whose duty it is to right the intolerance towards LGBTQ that has plagued religion through the years. They're not perfect and can have their own issues with prejudice and coercion, but they are massively better than the Evangelicals the USA and MAGA is famous for.

Yeah, i remember i've read that. Not ideal, but it's good they allow individual priests to make such decisions. I'm not a member though, and not very religious now, although been raised in much conservative religious tradition in Russia. And now seeing that church might be different, ethical and caring about minorities feels like a fresh air
